Professor Deon de Beer is chair of Innovation and Commercialization of Additive Manufacturing at Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT). At CUT, he started the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing, the Product Development Technology Station, and a Fab Lab. Previously, he was at Vaal University of Technology (VUT) where he started the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct and Design Centre, and VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park.
Professor de Beer founded the Idea 2 Product (I2P) lab concept, which has spread to countless facilities worldwide. He was given an Honorary Professorship at CUT. In 2015, de Beer was awarded the prestigious NSTF prize from the National Science and Technology Forum for his work in making additive manufacturing accessible in South Africa. Previously, he received the VRAP Career Award. He has published widely and speaks frequently at international events around the world.
Professor de Beer is credited with putting South Africa on the additive manufacturing “map” worldwide. The work he and his teams have done in the country has led to world-class products and services.
