Through the new site, visitors can access the Wohlers Report using a new automated ordering and provisioning system. They can also connect with the team of consultants and learn about what’s happening in the AM industry. Visitors can peruse resources, including a blog and audio series, and learn about upcoming training and other events.

FORT COLLINS, Colo., and YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, June 7, 2022—Wohlers Associates and America Makes are partnering to offer a three-day design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) course. The September 28-30, 2022 course will be held at America Makes’ headquarters in Youngstown, Ohio. The course is open to the public, with members of America Makes enjoying discounted pricing.

This marks the 27th consecutive year of publishing the industry-leading annual report. It provides new content and expert analysis on additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing worldwide.

Research for Wohlers Report 2022 shows AM industry growth of 19.5% in 2021. This is up from 7.5% growth in 2020, which was impacted greatly by the pandemic.

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Nov. 15, 2021 — Today, global standards organization ASTM International announced the acquisition of Wohlers Associates, a global intelligence leader in the additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing industry. The announcement coincided with the Standards Forum at Formnext 2021, which serves as the leading trade show for AM and next-generation intelligent manufacturing solutions.

As part of the acquisition, ASTM International acquires the Wohlers Report, the premier publication for the AM industry, along with intelligence briefs, specialized reports, training in design for AM, and consulting services.

Organizations involved with AM have vast amounts of post-processing knowledge and experience, yet little systematic documentation is available. This has led to countless companies “reinventing the wheel” and spending time and money unnecessarily to complete jobs. The methods and techniques described in this report can reduce trial-and-error that so many organizations use.

Post-processing is one of three major phases of producing 3D-printed parts. According to research conducted for Wohlers Report 2021, nearly 27% of the cost of producing AM parts comes from post-processing. The study involved input from 124 service providers in 27 countries. The following chart presents the cost segmentation between pre-processing, printing, and post-processing among companies that offer both metal and polymer AM.

Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, March 18, 2020—Wohlers Associates, Inc. today announced the publication of Wohlers Report 2020, the 25th annual installment of its undisputed, industry-leading report on additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing. Often referred to as the "bible" of 3D printing, the new report provides a unique window into the constantly advancing global industry. The publication provides countless details on AM applications, software, workflows, materials, systems, and post-processing. It gives specifics on patents, startups, investment, and research and development, and the future of AM.

The 380-page report includes a wealth of information on AM industry growth, including more than 250 examples of AM applications in production or development. In one case, Jabil redesigned an impeller for manufacture by AM. Instead of 73 metal parts assembled by hand, the impeller is made of fiber-reinforced polymer composite in a single part. Fifty impellers can be produced in the time it previously took to make one.

Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, June 24, 2019—Wohlers Report 2019, an annual report on the additive manufacturing (AM) industry, includes detailed input from 127 providers of AM services worldwide. Companies with both metal and polymer AM services reported that more than 26% of a part's cost is from post-processing, as shown in the accompanying chart. Post-processing can include powder removal, thermal stress relief, support material removal, surface treatment and finishing, and inspection. Print time and cost are determined largely by shape, mass, support material, and orientation when an AM part is built. All of these characteristics are heavily influenced by design, making good design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) practices a major factor in the economy of AM.

Due to the impact of design on AM economics and adoption, coupled with a shortage of workforce experience, Wohlers Associates is expanding its hands-on DfAM training. One of two courses has been scheduled for Austin, Texas on August 14-16, 2019 in connection with the 30th Annual Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin.
