Deon de Beer is Chief Director: Technology Transfer and Innovation Support, at North-West University. He held similar positions at Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) and Vaal University of Technology (VUT). At CUT, he started the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing, the Product Development Technology Station, and a Fab Lab. At VUT, de Beer started the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct and Design Centre, and VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park.
Professor de Beer also founded the Idea 2 Product (I2P) lab concept, which has spread to more than 25 facilities worldwide. He was given an Honorary Professorship at CUT, and acts as a research consultant to VUT. In 2015, de Beer was awarded the prestigious NSTF prize from the National Science and Technology Forum for his work in making additive manufacturing accessible in South Africa. Previously, he received the VRAP Career Award. He has published widely and speaks frequently at international events around the world.
