Steven Floyd is the Technical Fellow, Advanced Solutions for Aerospace & Defense at Wohlers Associates, powered by ASTM International. An experienced engineering technology leader with a passion for architecting and delivering advanced technology solutions built on strategic collaboration, Steven has over 17 years of experience in space and aeronautics systems engineering development. Much of that time has been focused on advanced manufacturing technology research and development, with an emphasis on additive manufacturing (AM) technologies.
In his prior role as Chief Engineer and Principal Investigator of AM technology development at Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation in the Space Systems sector, Steven led a multidisciplinary team developing, qualifying, and applying AM technologies across a wide range of products. This included leading business development and strategic partnerships for AM technology and engineering training. Over more than 10 years of AM research and development, he advanced polymer, composite, ceramic, and metal technologies across both small- and large-scale AM domains. His work led to Northrop Grumman’s first titanium metallic AM part to fly on a spacecraft.
Steven has also been a pioneer in the development of continuous fiber additive manufacturing (CFAM) for aerospace applications, with 12 years of experience in the development, testing, and technological advancement of CFAM capabilities for air and space vehicle platforms. While at Northrop Grumman, he was an inventor on eight granted U.S. patents for thermoplastic robotic CFAM technologies.
Additionally, Steven has over 10 years of structural analysis experience, including leadership roles on multiple space programs, as well as experience in engineering management and product line management. His work includes support for the James Webb Space Telescope and guidance in the development of precision mechanisms, propulsion subsystems, communications subsystems, and composite structures.
