Technical Fellow for Safety for Additive Manufacturing

Paul Bates supports Wohlers Associates as Technical Fellow for Safety for Additive Manufacturing. In this role, he leverages his extensive technical expertise to advance initiatives in additive manufacturing (AM) training, safety, and certification. As an industry-recognized veteran in additive manufacturing, Bates has made significant contributions to the field over a distinguished career. Paul’s expertise in additive manufacturing safety is particularly well recognized, and he has supported multiple customers in an advisory capacity. In addition to his professional achievements, Bates actively contributes to industry standards and safety, currently serving on the NFPA 660 committee for combustible metal dust.

Prior to joining ASTM, Bates held key leadership positions, including Manager of Facility Safety and Workforce Development in Additive Manufacturing at UL. He also spent over two decades at Reebok, where he led the company’s Additive Manufacturing Lab and 3D CAD Team as Director of Advanced Process Engineering, driving innovation in global athletic footwear design.

Bates is a recipient of the prestigious Additive Manufacturing User Group (AMUG) DINO Award (2012) and is a Past President of AMUG, reflecting his enduring impact on the AM community. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Design Technology from Bowling Green State University and a Master’s Degree in Technology Management from the University of Phoenix.
